There are plenty of myths swirling around about wine, so let’s uncork the health benefits of wine and common misconceptions and see the truth about what’s really inside that glass.

We love wine. We sip it, swirl it, and pair it with everything from pizza to fine dining. But how much do we actually know about the nutritional content of our favorite fermented friend? Is it a decadent indulgence or secretly a health food? (We’re obviously rooting for health food.)

(compare some popular drinks with wine)

Myth #1: Wine is Loaded with Sugar

Nope! Not all wine is created equal, but most dry wines have surprisingly little sugar—often less than a gram per glass. It’s true that sweeter styles (think dessert wines or some rosés) have more, but if you’re sipping a nice dry Shamrock Hills Crimson Cabernet, a Chardonel from Van Till or one of Fence Stile’s Chambourcins, you’re not exactly drinking liquid candy.

The real sugar villain? That flavored coffee you had this morning probably has 10 times more sugar than a glass of wine!

Myth #2: Wine Has No Nutritional Value

Think again! While we wouldn’t recommend replacing your daily vitamin with a glass of Cabernet Franc, wine does have some pretty impressive components:

Antioxidants – Red wines, in particular, are packed with polyphenols like resveratrol, which has been linked to heart health. (No, this doesn’t mean drinking more wine is better. Moderation, friends!)

Minerals – Wine contains small amounts of potassium, iron, and magnesium. It’s not a banana, but hey, it’s something.

Zero Fat & Low Carbs – A standard glass of dry wine has around 105-130 calories, similar to a light beer but way more sophisticated.

Myth #3: Red Wine is the Only Healthy Option

Red wine tends to get all the health hype because of its high antioxidant content, but white wine isn’t exactly slacking off. Studies suggest that white wines (like a crisp Edelweiss or a bright Vignoles) may have their own heart-healthy benefits, too! Plus, fewer tannins mean it’s easier on the stomach for some people.

At the end of the day, drink what you love. We support all wine choices here in Excelsior Wine Country.

Myth #4: Wine Dehydrates You

This one’s a bit tricky. Alcohol can be dehydrating, but wine itself is mostly water. If you’re sipping responsibly and drinking water alongside your vino (which we highly recommend), you’re in good shape. Just don’t replace your water bottle with a decanter. Hydration is still key!

Myth #5: Wine Before Bed = Bad Sleep

We’ve all been there—thinking that a nightcap will lull us into the best sleep of our lives. While a glass of wine can help you relax, too much can actually disrupt deep sleep cycles. So enjoy that after-dinner glass, but maybe not a whole bottle if you want to wake up feeling refreshed.

So… Is Wine Actually Healthy?

Like most good things in life, the key is moderation. Wine can absolutely be part of a balanced lifestyle, and research has shown that people who drink wine (responsibly) often live longer, happier lives. And if nothing else, sharing a bottle with friends and family definitely does the soul some good.

At Excelsior Wine Country, we’re big believers that wine isn’t just about what’s in the glass—it’s about the experience, the people you share it with, and the stories you tell along the way. So next time you pour yourself a glass, do it with joy, with curiosity, and maybe with a little snack. (Because let’s be honest, wine and cheese were meant to be together. 🧀🍷) So be a good friend and share this article with your friends who may not know the health benefits of wine and these common misconceptions

Cheers to your health, happiness, and another great bottle of Missouri wine!
